What is GenSIP?

The Generators Safety Integrity Programme (GenSIP) is a group of companies which came together in 2006 to share expertise and knowledge about safe management of ageing power generating assets, mainly coal plant at the time.

Good Practice

GenSIP has a programme of research leading to the provision of  industry good practice and GenSIP is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive for the  pioneering work carried out on behalf of UK generators.

Special Interests

The GenSIP specialist working groups comprise expertise in Pressure Systems, Mechanical Rotating Plant, Electricals, Civils, Control and Instrumentation, Solid Fuels and Hydrocarbons.

Why GenSIP?

The Generators Safety Integrity Programme was formed in response to emerging integrity issues in the UK’s fleet of ageing power plant, which had major personnel safety implications.

The GenSIP field of interest covers non-competitive common issues affecting personnel safety for UK generators. Members collaborate in a jointly-funded non-profit work programme to enable Good Practice guidance to be produced for key risks.  GenSIP provides members with an interface to other industry bodies and regulators such as Energy UK and the UK Health and Safety Executive.

As plant continues to operate beyond its original design life, an increasing number of plant integrity issues arise. Different failure modes emerge, for example flow assisted corrosion. As a result of this failures can occur in previously low risk areas.

Initially the group concerned all eight coal generating companies operating in the United Kingdom. In time the GenSIP scope extended to cover a range of generating assets including hydro, biomass, gas turbines and alternative fuels such as Energy from Waste.

GenSIP’s Response

A strategic framework addressing Process Safety risks associated with generating plant

Development of ‘Good Practice’ with related policies and standards

Discussion, sharing and peer challenge through specialist working groups

Technology solutions to major plant safety and integrity issues, supported by a research programme

Knowledge Assets

Among the key knowledge assets of GenSIP, is included:

Hazardous Event Register

Good Practice Guides

Technical Procedures

Guidance on ALARP

Worldwide Incidents Database

Process Safety Alerts

GenSIP Membership

GenSIP is not a commercial organisation and membership costs are based purely on the cost of supporting the project and administration work that the GenSIP Management Board approve each year.  The projects are chosen to support Members in managing Process Safety risks that can lead to injury and plant damage.  For this reason GenSIP does not make documentation and other intellectual property and data available for sale.  However, GenSIP does offer two forms of Membership to associated organisations.

Subject to acceptance by the GenSIP Management Board, an organisation can join as a Partner Member or Full Member.  Partner Membership is a fixed cost option for smaller plant owner/operators that provides the advantage of full access to all of GenSIP’s information and documentation and the opportunity to directly learn from the Process Safety experiences of other Members.

Further details on each category of Membership is available by contacting GenSIP using the Contact link at the top of this page.
